Domain-name registration |
|
If you want
your own URL, your own
www address, you must register and pay for your domain name. The cost is
$35/year.
The allocation of unique
web addresses (URLs) is the responsibility of InterNIC (Internet Network
Information Center), part of the U.S. Department of Commerce. InterNIC
collects the registration fees, but the "paperwork" is handled by private-company
registrars.
The largest registrar is www.register.com.

Web-hosting
services provide space for websites on their big computers. If you have your own
domain name, and especially if you want to do business on the Internet, you will
surely choose one of the commercial services. There are free services as
well. |

Commercial web-hosting services |
|
Review sites. There are wide variations in
rates and services. Some sites make it their business to sort out
web-hosting services. One is hostreview.com.
The site has a glossary,
many helpful articles about
what to consider in choosing a web host, as well as a forum for user
comments. |
|
The LLI site and the techforecast site are hosted by myhosting.com, a Canadian
company. The cost is $9.95/month, for 50 MB of space. That is about 10
times the size of a typical small website. |

Free web space |
|
Sites that offer free space generally put advertisements
on your page. Your Internet Service Provider may provide space for you.
If not, you might want to consider others. The
availability of free web space is growing rapidly.

Geocities
was one of the first free-web-hosting sites. Geocities is part of Yahoo.
With my own "My
Yahoo" user name, I set up a home page there in just a few
minutes: http://www.geocities.com/mbakker2/ |
