Exercises
1. Open the Windows Explorer on your computer. 
Note the My Documents and My Pictures folders.  
Minimize the Windows Explorer. 
2. Create a Microsoft Word document
Open MS Word. Write a sentence that includes your last name. 
Save your file [File > Save As]. 
Name it practice (the doc extension will be added automatically) and save it in My Documents. Close MS Word. 
3.
Save a picture.  
With your cursor on the animated gif (named atom.gif), right-click for a menu that includes "save picture as." Save the picture in My Pictures
4. Make sub-folders
Open the Windows Explorer if it is not already open.
In My Documents create a personal sub-folder named with your last name.
In My Pictures create a personal sub-folder named with your last name.
5 Move files
To move a file, highlight the file name in the right frame, hit [control +x], then highlight the destination folder in the left frame and hit [control +v]. 
Move practice.doc into your My Documents/personal folder. 
Move atom.gif into your My Pictures/personal folder.
  Copy a file
To copy a file, highlight the file name in the right frame and hit [control +c], then highlight the destination folder in the left frame and hit [control +v]. 
6. Find a file
Right-click on the Start button. Hit Search. "Look in" the whole C: drive. 
Find the file named practice.doc.  Find the file that contains your last name. 
2005 note: Finding files has become much easier with the advent of Desktop Search Engines. At home, you may want to install a desktop search.
